In the early evening of May 26, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a stretch of Dixie Highway in southwestern Jefferson County. First responders rushed to the 14500 block of the busy thoroughfare around 7 p.m. following reports of a shooting. There, they discovered 30-year-old Julius D. Richie inside a vehicle, suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
Paramedics worked quickly to stabilize Richie before transporting him to UofL Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, his injuries proved to be too severe. Richie, a Louisville man, succumbed to his wounds at the hospital, leaving behind a daughter, his mother, and three siblings. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that a gunshot wound was the cause of his death.
In the days that followed, the Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit took the lead on the investigation. However, details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remained scarce. Authorities did not immediately release information about a potential motive or any individuals they were seeking in connection with the fatal shooting.
