In the quiet neighborhood of St. Denis in Louisville, Kentucky, a tragedy unfolded that would forever alter the lives of the Williams family. On the evening of December 16, 2022, 19-year-old Eric Williams, a Black male, was inside his home with his family. What began as a normal evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire as bullets tore through the walls and windows of their house. Eric was struck and fell, tragically succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
His sister, who was with him, witnessed the horrific event.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led Louisville Metro Police to identify and apprehend three suspects. Tevin Smyzer, age 20, and Justyn Dwayne Walls, age 19, were the first to be taken into custody. Court records revealed a chilling account of the events leading up to the shooting. Investigators alleged that Smyzer and Walls drove to the Williams' residence in a stolen white Ford Explorer and opened fire on the house. Following the shooting, they reportedly fled in a different vehicle, a black Ford Explorer. Their trail did not end there, as they were later accused of using a stolen credit card from the initial vehicle to make various purchases around Louisville.
A third individual, 18-year-old JaQuan Duggar Jr., was later arrested in connection with the murder. Through surveillance footage and further investigation, authorities charged him with complicity to murder, wanton endangerment, and receiving stolen property. While the arrests brought a measure of justice to a grieving family and a shaken community, the profound loss of a young life left an indelible mark. Smyzer and Walls were held on a $250,000 full cash bond as they awaited trial, a stark reminder of the violence that had so suddenly visited a quiet street and a loving home.
