In the late hours of a November night in Albany, New York, the life of John 'Johnny' Welcome Jr., a 35-year-old Black / African American man, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On November 21, 2021, Welcome was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso near the intersection of Central and North Lake avenues. Despite being rushed to Albany Medical Center Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence that had claimed one of its own.
Remembered as a devoted father, husband, son, and brother, Welcome was known for his warm smile and his job as a security guard at the Schuyler Inn, where he was a familiar and reassuring presence.
The investigation into his death swiftly revealed that this was not a random act. Albany police identified 40-year-old Sean Pacheco of nearby Watervliet as the man responsible for the fatal shooting. The confrontation that led to Welcome's death was described as a dispute between the two men. Pacheco was taken into custody, and the subsequent investigation uncovered an illegally possessed firearm and a quantity of cocaine at his residence, adding further charges to the homicide.
Justice for John Welcome moved through the legal system, culminating in Sean Pacheco's guilty plea to second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and other related offenses. In April 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Pacheco had approached the unarmed Welcome outside a hookah lounge and fired 14 times in what the prosecutor described as a 'heinous and cowardly fashion.' Welcome's family, including his widow who was pregnant with their son at the time of the murder, expressed their profound loss and devastation, remembering him as a beloved family man whose absence would be forever felt.
