In the early moments of June 19, 2023, a violent encounter on a Minneapolis freeway tragically cut short the life of 24-year-old Omarai Nasir Engle, a Black/African American male from Fridley. The incident, which is believed to have begun as a shooting on Interstate 94 near the Dowling Avenue exit ramp, concluded with a jarring crash and a young man suffering from fatal injuries.
Around midnight, Minneapolis police officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Dowling Avenue North and 6th
Street North following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a vehicle that had veered off the road and collided with a garage. Inside the car was Omarai Nasir Engle, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene before he was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Engle succumbed to his injuries shortly after 1 a.m.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Engle's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations by the Minneapolis Police Department suggest that the shooting likely occurred on the nearby interstate, leading to the crash at the Dowling Avenue and 6th Street North intersection.
As the investigation into the death of Omarai Nasir Engle continues, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
