Dontevius Ahmad Catchings, aged 29, was fatally shot on June 11, 2021, outside the Shiloh Temple in North Minneapolis. The incident occurred shortly after the funeral of Christopher Robert Jones Jr., a 24-year-old who had been killed in a previous shooting outside the Monarch nightclub in downtown Minneapolis on May 22. Catchings was attending the funeral when he became involved in a physical altercation with Kevin Mason, aged 26.
Witnesses reported that both Catchings and Mason were
members of the same street gang and had a history of conflict. During the altercation, Catchings prevailed in a fistfight, leaving Mason with a bloodied face. As Catchings walked away, Mason unexpectedly pulled out a handgun and began shooting at him repeatedly, calling him derogatory names as he fired. The shooting was observed by police officers who were monitoring the funeral due to concerns about potential gang violence.
Following the shooting, Mason fled the scene, and his whereabouts remained unknown. He was charged with second-degree murder, but had not been apprehended as of the latest reports. Mason had deleted his Facebook page after the incident, further complicating efforts to locate him. The investigation into the shooting continued, with authorities seeking any information that could lead to Mason's arrest.
