Crenshaw was sitting at a card table in the garage with several others, including 31-year-old Daniel Martez Walker of Bayport. Witnesses reported that Walker stood up without provocation and shot Crenshaw in the chest at close range. One witness stated that Crenshaw was 'just sitting there, not even talking' when he was shot.
Walker, who had a lengthy criminal history and was on parole at the time, claimed there was a $50,000 bounty on his life and that Crenshaw might have known about it. However, this claim was not substantiated, and witnesses described the shooting as unprovoked. Walker was arrested the following day and later admitted to the shooting when confronted with police evidence.
Crenshaw's family described him as a hardworking and spiritual young man with a fantastic sense of humor. He was a father, brother, son, nephew, and friend who had aspirations of becoming a better man for his daughter. His aunt, Allegra Sletten, shared that Crenshaw had dedicated himself to graduating on time, even missing family gatherings and canceling plans with friends to focus on his studies.
In September 2024, Daniel Martez Walker was found guilty of second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm following a nine-day trial. On October 21, 2024, Walker was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the fatal shooting. With credit for time served, he is expected to serve nearly 26 years in prison, followed by supervised release.
The tragic death of Reese Crenshaw, described by the Hennepin County Attorney as 'a callous act of unprovoked violence,' cut short the life of a young man who had just achieved a significant milestone and had his whole future ahead of him.
