Deleon Davis, a 28-year-old man from St. Paul, Minnesota, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day 2023 in Minneapolis. The incident took place at an after-hours party held in a warehouse and office complex in north Minneapolis.
At approximately 3:40 AM on January 1, 2023, Davis was shot multiple times during the gathering.
After the shooting, Davis managed to flag down police officers from the passenger seat of a vehicle about two blocks south of the reported shooting location. The officers noticed that Davis had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite efforts to save him, Davis succumbed to his injuries about five hours later, marking the first homicide of the year in Minneapolis.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office officially identified the victim as Deleon Daniel Davis of St. Paul. An autopsy report confirmed that Davis died due to multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were initially unclear, but further investigation revealed potential motives. According to statements from Davis' girlfriend, who was present at the party, the incident may have been related to a confrontation with her ex-boyfriend, Bernard Augusta Mack. Mack allegedly approached Davis at the party, accusing him of breaking the windows of his car, which had reportedly cost $1,200 to repair.
In late January 2023, Bernard Augusta Mack, also 28 years old and from St. Paul, was charged with second-degree murder and unlawful weapon possession in connection with Davis' death. However, after a week-long trial and approximately 11 hours of jury deliberation, Mack was acquitted of all charges on June 8, 2023.
