On December 3, 2023, at approximately 2:15 a.m., a confrontation between two groups of customers inside Royal Cigar & Tobacco in Minneapolis' Dinkytown neighborhood escalated into gunfire. The altercation resulted in the deaths of 24-year-old Minneapolis residents Jamartre Michael Sanders and Bryson Lamarr Haskell, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. A store employee, also in his twenties, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident.
