Derek Angelo Burgess, a 35-year-old resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota, tragically lost his life on June 1, 2024, in a shooting incident in north Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office officially identified Burgess as the victim on June 17, 2024, ruling his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred in the 3500 block of Penn Avenue North.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara reported that officers responded to a call about a shooting at this location on the night of June 1. Upon arrival, they found Burgess with life-threatening injuries and immediately provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived at the scene.
Burgess was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 7:30 p.m. on the same day. His death marked the second homicide in north Minneapolis on that day, following another fatal shooting just hours earlier in the area between James and Knox avenues on 34th Avenue North.
As of June 18, 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with Burgess's death. The Minneapolis Police Department stated that the investigation remains active, but no additional details were available at that time. The community mourned the loss of Burgess, who was born on February 21, 1989, and lived for 35 years before his untimely death.
