On January 26, 2024, the life of 20-year-old Jorge Reyes-Jungwirth was tragically cut short in a brutal triple homicide inside his family's home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. The young man, along with his mother, Shannon Jungwirth, age 42, and his stepfather, Mario Trejo Estrada, age 39, were fatally shot in an attack that unfolded while two young children were also in the house.
The harrowing incident began when three men, posing as UPS delivery workers, forced their way into the residence on the 200 block of 94th Avenue Northwest.
The assailants, dressed in clothing resembling UPS uniforms and carrying a cardboard box to complete their disguise, held the family at gunpoint and demanded money. The events that followed were captured by surveillance cameras inside the home, revealing a scene of terror. Shannon Jungwirth was shot at point-blank range in a bedroom, a moment her young children witnessed before one hysterically cried over her body. Jorge Reyes-Jungwirth and Mario Trejo Estrada were also shot and found deceased in different areas of the home. All three victims died from gunshot wounds to the head. The two young children, who were Jorge's half-siblings, were found physically unharmed by police who responded to a 911 call that captured sounds of a disturbance.
An investigation swiftly led to the identification and arrest of three suspects. Alonzo Pierre Mingo, a 37-year-old former UPS employee, was apprehended on the same day as the killings. He initially denied his involvement but was later charged. He has since been convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Two brothers, 19-year-old Omari Shumpert and 31-year-old Demetrius Shumpert, were also arrested and charged with second-degree murder for their alleged roles in the home invasion and killings. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Omari Shumpert and Alonzo Mingo as the shooters.
Court documents filed in the case suggested a possible motive connected to Jorge's stepfather, Mario Trejo Estrada, who was allegedly involved in drug trafficking and was the subject of a separate investigation. Authorities believe the assailants targeted the home to rob him. Despite the alleged criminal activities of his stepfather, there was no information to suggest Jorge Reyes-Jungwirth was involved. Friends remembered him as a bright and kind young man with a hopeful future ahead of him.
