In the late hours of a Thursday night in South Minneapolis, the life of a young Black man, 23-year-old Trejon Sands, was tragically cut short. On May 30, 2019, Sands was seated in a parked car in the 2900 block of South Grand Avenue, near the Midtown Greenway, when he was ambushed. Witnesses reported that a gunman approached the vehicle just before 11 p.m.
and opened fire, striking Sands multiple times in the chest.
The sound of gunfire shattered the neighborhood's calm, prompting calls to the police. Responding officers discovered Sands gravely wounded and immediately began administering CPR in a desperate attempt to save him. Paramedics arrived and rushed him to Hennepin County Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe. Trejon Sands succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of Friday.
In the immediate aftermath, Minneapolis police and homicide detectives swarmed the area, canvassing for any information that could lead to the person responsible. A witness reported seeing at least one suspect fleeing the scene on foot, prompting an extensive search that included a police dog. Despite their efforts and an active investigation, no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The motive for the attack remained unclear to the public, leaving friends and family to mourn and remember Sands through tributes on social media.
