Authorities are investigating whether Smith's death is connected to another
fatal shooting that occurred approximately 15 minutes earlier on the 3400 block of 3rd Avenue South. In that incident, officers responded to reports of gunfire and found 23-year-old Abdullah Ibrahim Ramzy suffering from a gunshot wound. Ramzy was also transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where he succumbed to his injuries. While police have confirmed that the two men were shot in separate incidents, they are still working to determine if the shootings are related.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide of James Edward Smith.
