On a summer evening in Fridley, Minnesota, a sequence of events tragically cut short the life of 15-year-old Anthony Joseph Rouse. On July 18, 2021, Rouse, a male of Native American descent from Blaine, was with two other people in a van. The driver of the vehicle intended to purchase marijuana and had arranged to meet a seller at a location on Main Street.
The transaction took a violent turn when another individual, later identified as 17-year-old Isaiah Harold-Stephaun Holmes,
approached the van. Brandishing a handgun, Holmes announced a robbery and warned the occupants not to flee. In an attempt to escape, the driver accelerated the van. In response, Holmes fired multiple shots into the vehicle, striking Rouse in the neck and shoulder area. His companions rushed him to a nearby hospital. Rouse was subsequently transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later, on July 20, 2021. His death was ruled a homicide, caused by complications from the gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to Isaiah Harold-Stephaun Holmes. Initially, Holmes denied any involvement, claiming he was nearby but not at the scene of the shooting. However, witness testimony and surveillance footage from the area contradicted his account, showing him firing into the van. Holmes was arrested and charged as a juvenile with two counts of second-degree murder, assault, and attempted first-degree aggravated robbery. Prosecutors moved to have him certified to stand trial as an adult. In early 2022, Holmes, by then 18, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Anthony Joseph Rouse.
