On September 9, 2022, a tragic incident occurred at Bullwinkle's Saloon in Minneapolis, resulting in the death of 34-year-old Maurice Cortez Crumble. The event took place during a private party at the bar, where a dispute escalated into a deadly shootout. The Minneapolis Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 1:00 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found Crumble with life-threatening gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shootout involved multiple individuals, with at least five people firing weapons indiscriminately. Among the suspects was 34-year-old Devord Allen of Minneapolis, who was charged with first-degree riot resulting in death and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Allen was on parole at the time and was supposed to be living in a halfway house. He was arrested on September 29, 2022, after police tracked his cellphone movements.
Witnesses and video footage revealed that the altercation began near the bar's entry when two individuals refused to leave the event as requested by security personnel. Gunfire erupted inside the bar and continued outside, where Crumble and others were caught in the crossfire. Allen admitted to firing shots but claimed he did not know who he was shooting at or why. He fled the scene immediately and later sold the gun used in the incident.
The chaotic scene left three other men in their 30s with serious injuries. The incident marked one of the more violent nights in Minneapolis, with other unrelated shootings occurring in the city around the same time.
