In the pre-dawn hours of a cold Saturday in north Minneapolis, Jeremiah Eli Black, a 42-year-old White / Caucasian man, was outside working on a vehicle. It was around 4 a.m. on February 18, 2023, in an alley on the 3500 block of Girard Avenue North, when another vehicle unexpectedly approached him. An argument broke out between Black and at least one person in the other vehicle.
The confrontation quickly escalated, and the sounds of gunfire shattered the morning quiet.
Suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Black was found by responding officers with life-threatening injuries. The vehicle that had approached him had already fled the scene. Emergency responders rushed him to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, but his injuries proved to be fatal. Jeremiah Eli Black was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 4:45 a.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The Minneapolis Police Department opened an investigation into the shooting death of Jeremiah Black. Despite their efforts and public calls for information, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The circumstances surrounding the argument that led to the fatal shooting remain under investigation, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or the vehicle involved in the incident.
