On April 27, 2021, Liibaan Baqarre, a 40-year-old store clerk, was fatally shot during a robbery at a shop in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, MN. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at a store located on the 400 block of Cedar Avenue. Baqarre was behind the counter when a man entered the store, pointed a gun at the owner, and demanded money. As Baqarre attempted to lock the door, the suspect shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene in a black car.
Baqarre was later pronounced dead at Hennepin Healthcare.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Marlow Carson, was arrested early the next morning in St. Paul. Carson has a history of robbery crimes and was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree aggravated robbery, and possessing ammunition or a firearm after a conviction for a crime of violence. The incident was captured on surveillance video, which helped investigators identify Carson's vehicle and track him down. During his arrest, Carson was found with a handgun and was wearing the same clothes as seen in the video.
In an interview with police, Carson admitted to owning the handgun but initially denied being the shooter. However, after being shown the surveillance footage, he made several statements acknowledging his involvement in the incident. Carson referred to himself in the third person, saying he had an extremely bad day and did not plan on hurting anyone. Cartridge casings recovered from the scene matched those from Carson's gun. Carson was later sentenced to 30 years in prison for his crimes.
