On a Tuesday afternoon, May 30, 2017, in the Jordan neighborhood of North Minneapolis, 22-year-old Aaron Jerome Williams Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot while sitting in a parked blue van. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the corner of 30th Avenue North and Irving Avenue North. Witnesses reported seeing a man exit a white truck, possibly a Jeep, and get into the passenger seat of Williams' van just before a gunshot was heard.
The suspect was then seen fleeing the scene in the same white truck, which was driven by another individual. Williams was transported to North Memorial Medical Center, where he died from a gunshot wound to the head a few hours later.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Minneapolis police began an investigation, exploring several possible motives. One theory detectives considered was that the shooting was the result of a drug deal that had gone wrong. Another prominent theory was that Williams may have been targeted for cooperating with law enforcement. Investigators were looking into the possibility that his death was connected to information he had provided to police regarding the killing of 26-year-old Iesha L. Wiley, who had been shot outside a strip mall two weeks prior. Despite these leads and the accounts of eyewitnesses, no immediate arrests were made in the case.
For years, the case remained unresolved, leaving Williams' friends and family without answers. However, a significant development occurred in June 2024, more than seven years after the fatal shooting. A grand jury in Hennepin County indicted 36-year-old Marvel Galvaston Williams for the murder of Aaron Williams. At the time of the indictment, Marvel Williams was already incarcerated, serving a 24-year sentence for his role in a 2021 rolling gun battle in downtown Minneapolis that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old bystander. The indictment charged him with first-degree premeditated murder, finally bringing a suspect to the forefront of the long-standing investigation into Aaron Williams' death.
