On the night of March 2, 2024, a 35-year-old male, Alvin Ray Henry, was fatally shot in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred at approximately 11:39 p.m. in the 1400 block of East Biddle Street. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert, police officers discovered Henry suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of a suspect, 36-year-old Derrell Goines.
Detectives were able to connect Goines to the murder of Alvin Raymond Henry, Jr. through surveillance video and ballistic evidence. Goines was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and firearm use in a felony or violent crime.
The case proceeded to trial, where details of the events leading to Henry's death emerged. It was revealed that the shooting occurred after a dispute at a birthday party. The defense for Derrell Goines, who was described as a licensed firearm owner with no criminal record, argued that he acted in self-defense. His attorney claimed that Henry had been irrational and intoxicated, and had pointed a gun at Goines, prompting Goines to fire his own weapon in retaliation. Following three days of testimony, the jury acquitted Derrell Goines of both the first-degree murder charge and the felony firearm use charge on September 11, 2025.
