On a late afternoon in early summer, a violent confrontation inside a Coon Rapids apartment building claimed the life of 21-year-old Elijah James Stangler. The incident, which occurred on June 6, 2022, also resulted in the death of 23-year-old Sherman Lashawn Antonio Frazier of Coon Rapids. Stangler was a resident of Anoka.
Just before 5 p.m., an argument involving three men erupted within an apartment on the 9400 block of Springbrook Drive NW, escalating to an exchange of gunfire.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found three men injured. Life-saving measures were attempted on two of the men who were in critical condition. Frazier was pronounced dead at the apartment. Stangler was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A third man involved in the altercation sustained only minor injuries. He was treated at a hospital and subsequently taken into custody by law enforcement. However, this individual was later released pending further investigation into the deadly shooting.
The Anoka County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the double homicide. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the nature of the argument that led to the fatal gunfire or information about any potential suspects. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Elijah James Stangler and Sherman Lashawn Antonio Frazier.
