On August 16, 2019, Mohamed Hassan, a 17-year-old from Burnsville, MN, was tragically shot and killed during a late-night gathering in north Minneapolis. The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. in the 3200 block of N. Lyndale Avenue. According to police and emergency radio dispatch audio, Hassan was found with a gunshot wound to the head. The shooting happened as gunfire erupted during a gathering of about 20 people, most of whom fled the scene as officers arrived.

Hassan, a soon-to-be high school senior and varsity basketball player, was described by friends and family as a sociable and easygoing individual whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence. The incident marked the third homicide in Minneapolis within a week and the 22nd of the year.
