On a summer day in Albany, New York, the life of 21-year-old NyJawaun Thomas was cut short in a violent encounter. On June 24, 2020, following a brief car chase, Thomas emerged from the wreckage of a rented U-Haul truck near the intersection of South Pearl Street and Morton Avenue. It was there, just steps from a police station, that he was gunned down. The shooter, Jarrell Howard, then a teenager, reportedly circled back and fired again, though authorities believe Thomas was already deceased.
