Dakota Edward Kersey, a 16-year-old male from Ensley, Florida, was found with a single gunshot wound to his head on December 18, 2019. The incident occurred at a trailer park located in the 9700 block of Grace Drive. Dakota was transported to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead on December 26, 2019, and subsequently taken off life support on December 28, 2019. The Escambia County Sheriff's Office ruled out suicide early in the investigation and focused on the possibility of foul play.
The investigation led to the arrest of Kristian Nealy Ard, an 18-year-old woman from Pensacola, Florida. Ard was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, grand theft of a firearm, contributing to the delinquency of a child, knowingly giving false information to a law enforcement officer, possession of drug equipment, three counts of destroying evidence, and five counts of possession of drugs with the intent to sell, manufacture, and distribute. During the investigation, officers found the firearm used in the shooting in Ard's purse, along with a spent shell casing hidden in a cigarette pack. Additionally, they discovered cocaine, marijuana, THC cartridges, ammunition, counterfeit currency, alcohol, and drug paraphernalia in Ard's vehicle.
Ard provided false information to law enforcement throughout the investigation, which further complicated the case. Investigators found photos and videos on Ard's phone showing her in possession of various drugs and firearms, including the one used to shoot Dakota. Ard's actions and the evidence collected led to her being sentenced to 20 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of probation. The motive behind the shooting was believed to be jealousy over a new girlfriend, according to Dakota's mother.
The case highlighted the dangers of drug use and illegal firearm possession among teenagers. Ard's sentencing was seen as a measure to ensure community safety and to serve as a deterrent for similar crimes in the future. The tragic death of Dakota Edward Kersey, a young male from Ensley, Florida, underscored the need for continued efforts to address youth violence and substance abuse in the community.
