On a Saturday afternoon in May 2023, the Village Barber and Beauty on Second Avenue in Albany, New York, became the scene of a tragedy that cut short the life of Tyrone Michael Staley. The 47-year-old male barber was inside the shop, working, when a stolen Toyota Camry carrying four young men pulled up. The occupants were associated with a North Albany street gang and were reportedly seeking revenge on a rival.
They spotted their target, a 19-year-old man, leaving the barbershop and unleashed a hail of bullets from automatic weapons.
As the shots rang out, chaos erupted inside the barbershop. The intended target managed to escape with a gunshot wound to his foot, while the shop's owner shielded his 9-year-old grandson, who was grazed by a bullet. Staley, an innocent bystander in the violent feud, was struck in the back as he stood by a barber chair. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Friends and family remembered him as a loving father and a talented barber who was known for his kindness, often giving free haircuts to children in the community.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of several individuals. Timmoure Miller, who was 18 at the time of his arrest, was charged in connection with the killing. In October 2024, Miller, then 19, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. The following month, he was sentenced to 25 years in state prison. He also received concurrent sentences for two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Another suspect, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, also pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. The case highlighted issues with New York's 'Raise the Age' statute, as it was revealed that some of the suspects had prior gun-related arrests that were handled in Family Court. A fourth suspect in the vehicle has reportedly never been identified by police.
