In the spring of 2022, the life of 30-year-old Wendall Ponce was cut short in a fatal shooting in Albany, New York. On May 4th, Ponce was discovered deceased inside a residence on Stanwix Street, having sustained gunshot wounds. The incident marked the second homicide in the city that year.
Not long after the discovery of Ponce's body, law enforcement received another report of a shooting victim nearby on Bogart Terrace.
There, they found 40-year-old Douglas Bynum suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. Bynum was also in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun. He was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators quickly established a connection between the two men, stating that they were known to each other and that the shooting was not a random act. The day after Ponce's death, on May 5th, Douglas Bynum was arrested at the hospital where he was receiving treatment. He was arraigned at the hospital on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon and subsequently remanded to the custody of the Albany County Sheriff's Department while still hospitalized. The investigation into the specific circumstances that led to the deadly encounter continued as authorities worked to piece together the events of that day.
