In the late hours of May 20, 2015, Herbert Goodnight, a 60-year-old Black male, was shot and killed inside an apartment located at 369 First Street in Albany, New York. Police responded to the scene around 11:15 p.m. and found Goodnight, who was pronounced dead at the location. This incident marked the third homicide in the city within a few weeks, causing concern among local residents and officials.
Originally from Brooklyn, Goodnight had a criminal history that included convictions for
drugs and robbery, and he was on parole at the time of his death. Investigators in sterile suits were observed gathering evidence at the multi-apartment dwelling for hours after the shooting. Police also looked into footage from a security camera on a house across the street, though it was uncertain if it captured anything of value to the investigation.
Despite the efforts of the Albany Police Department, no arrests have been made in the years following the shooting, and the case remains an unsolved homicide. Goodnight's estranged wife, Lorraine Goodnight, expressed her grief and frustration, stating that he was a good person who did not deserve to die in such a manner and called for justice. The Capital Region Crime Stoppers has offered a monetary reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Albany Police Detective Division.
