In the late hours of a summer night in Albany, New York, the life of 23-year-old Eddie Richardson was tragically cut short. On June 24, 2020, Richardson, a male remembered by loved ones as sweet, kind, and family-oriented, was fatally shot in the chest in the area of 142 Second Avenue. His sudden death was part of a particularly violent day in the city, a day that saw five people shot, with Richardson being one of two fatalities.
The investigation into Richardson's homicide led to the
arrest of 24-year-old Najahliek Edmunds on August 11, 2020. At the time of his arrest, Edmunds was found to be in possession of an illegal. 380 caliber pistol. A grand jury returned an indictment against Edmunds for the murder of Richardson, and he was also charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Further investigation revealed that Edmunds did not act alone. An indictment was unsealed, charging 26-year-old Ciara Hooks of Albany with rendering aid and criminal assistance to Edmunds following the shooting. She faced felony charges of second-degree criminal facilitation and first-degree hindering prosecution.
In court, Najahliek Edmunds initially pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. However, he later changed his plea, admitting his guilt in the second-degree murder of Eddie Richardson. Following his guilty plea, Edmunds faced a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Ciara Hooks, his alleged accomplice, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her. She was released on her own recognizance pending further legal proceedings.
