In the early morning hours of July 24, 2021, Rashad Nicholson, a 30-year-old Black male, was fatally shot near the intersection of Third and Oak streets in Albany, New York. Responding medics discovered Nicholson with gunshot wounds to his torso. He was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident left a void in the lives of his loved ones, including his four children.
For over a year, the case remained without a formal charging of a
suspect. Then, in November 2022, a breakthrough occurred when 28-year-old Nicholas Anderson of Albany was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Nicholson's death. Anderson initially pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
In March 2024, Nicholas Anderson pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter. On June 7, 2024, he was sentenced to 15 years in state prison. This sentence is set to run concurrently with an eight-year sentence he is already serving for separate assault and weapons convictions, resulting in a total of 23 years of incarceration. During the sentencing, family members of Rashad Nicholson, including his sister, girlfriend, and mother, delivered emotional impact statements. His sister described the act as a cowardly decision, while his girlfriend spoke of the four children who would now grow up without their father due to a 'split-second decision' over something insignificant. The judge, in his remarks, expressed his disbelief in Anderson's remorse for his actions.
