In the quiet neighborhood of Newburg in Louisville, Kentucky, a chilling event shattered the evening calm. Papa Thiam, a 31-year-old male cab driver and a native of Africa, was working his shift, unaware that his life was about to be tragically cut short. On that Sunday night, November 16, 2014, he was found inside his taxi, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound.
The incident, which unfolded on Garden Green Way, appeared to be a robbery that had taken a violent turn.
The events leading to the discovery of Thiam's body were chaotic and alarming to residents. Witnesses heard gunshots, described as a series of 'pop, pop, pop,' just before his cab was seen careening out of control. The vehicle struck a lamppost, plowed through a fence, and sped across a lawn before finally coming to a stop after hitting a tree. When emergency services arrived, they found Thiam inside his cab, having succumbed to a single gunshot wound.
In the hours and days that followed, the Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to arrests. Initially, three male juveniles, aged 15, 16, and 17, were taken into custody and charged with murder and tampering with evidence.
