The attack was sudden and brutal, with bullets striking him at least three times in the head and neck. The gunman fled the scene before authorities could arrive, leaving Edwards in critical condition. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital where he began what would become a harrowing, months-long battle for survival.
