In the early moments of a Wednesday morning, the quiet of a Birmingham, Alabama, shopping plaza was shattered by the sound of gunfire. It was June 12, 2024, and for 30-year-old TaDarrius Omar Debodre Jones, a Black male, it would be his last sunrise. Just after 12:20 a.m., in the parking lot of a small strip mall located in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue West, Mr.
Jones was with a group of people when the night took a violent turn.
According to the initial findings of the Birmingham Police Department, an unknown individual approached Mr. Jones and opened fire. At least thirty rounds were discharged, a testament to the brutal nature of the attack. When West Precinct officers arrived at the scene in response to a call of a person shot, they found Mr. Jones lying face down, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response from Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The assailant, having carried out the deadly assault, fled the location before law enforcement could arrive, melting back into the night. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the investigation into what was marked as Birmingham's 60th murder investigation of 2024 was launched.
