In the early moments of a Wednesday morning, the quiet of a Birmingham, Alabama, shopping plaza was shattered by the sound of gunfire. It was June 12, 2024, and for 30-year-old TaDarrius Omar Debodre Jones, a Black male, it would be his last sunrise. Just after 12:20 a.m., in the parking lot of a small strip mall located in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue West, Mr. Jones was with a group of people when the night took a violent turn.
