On the night of November 2, 2021, 15-year-old Jamere Wade was shot and killed in Rochester, New York. The incident occurred in front of a residence on Peckham Street. Wade, a student at Franklin High School, was described by a former teacher as a 'fun' and 'goofy kid' with high energy. His death marked another tragic loss to gun violence in the city.
Following an extensive investigation by the Rochester Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, Jailyn Johnson was identified as the person
responsible for the fatal shooting. Johnson, who was 20 years old at the time of his plea, was arrested and an illegal weapon was discovered in his residence.
On July 25, 2023, Jailyn Johnson pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the 1st Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree for the shooting death of Jamere Wade. He was sentenced to 25 years in the New York State Department of Corrections, to be followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Prosecutors described the killing as a 'senseless crime,' expressing hope that the conviction would bring some comfort to Wade's family.
