In the late summer of 2015, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in a Birmingham, Alabama, apartment, leaving a family shattered and a community in disbelief. On the afternoon of August 18th, 31-year-old Divine Vaniah Chambliss, a male, was found unresponsive by the mother of his children. He had been looking after their two-year-old son while she was at work.
Upon her return, she discovered Chambliss in bed with a single gunshot wound to his head.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but nothing could be done; Chambliss was pronounced dead. The initial investigation by law enforcement quickly began to piece together the tragic sequence of events. Detectives worked through various possibilities, including the involvement of an intruder or the prospect of a self-inflicted wound. However, the evidence began to point toward a scenario that was almost too painful to comprehend.
Investigators found no signs of forced entry, and the physical evidence did not align with a suicide. Instead, all indications suggested that the fatal shot was fired by Chambliss's own two-year-old son. Family members revealed that Chambliss, who worked as a security guard at his church, regularly carried a firearm for protection but was known to keep the safety engaged. It is thought that he may have placed the semiautomatic pistol under a pillow while he lay down to rest, where his son subsequently found it. Police officials stated that their investigation led them to believe the child found the gun and unintentionally shot his father. At the time of the initial reports, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's office had completed an autopsy, with an official ruling on the cause of death pending. The case was treated as a horrific accident, and there were no reports of any arrests or suspects in the conventional sense, as the focus remained on the unimaginable tragedy that had befallen the Chambliss family.
