In the early moments of February 1, 2025, a wave of violence swept through Birmingham, Alabama, claiming the life of 22-year-old Xavier Colvert, a Black male. The initial chaotic scene unfolded just after midnight in the Ensley neighborhood, specifically in the 1400 block of 57th Street. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple rounds fired, Birmingham police officers arrived to a grim discovery. Colvert was found unresponsive inside his white pickup truck, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to the location but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators at the scene found at least a half-dozen shell casings near the passenger side of Colvert's vehicle, suggesting a violent and sudden attack. The preliminary investigation did not immediately point to a clear motive for the shooting. This incident marked the city's ninth homicide of the year and was tragically followed by another fatal shooting in a different part of the city just 21 minutes later, deepening the community's concern over escalating gun violence.
Within days, the Birmingham Police Department announced a significant development in the case. On February 6, 2025, detectives obtained a warrant for the arrest of 22-year-old Rickey Darnell Bodden, charging him with the murder of Xavier Colvert. The following day, members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, acting on the warrant, located and apprehended Bodden in the 700 block of First Street North. He was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he was held without bond. The arrest brought a measure of progress to the investigation, though the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter between Bodden and Colvert have not been publicly detailed.
