Kayla Alexandria Warren was a 28-year-old Black woman with a passion for music, known to some as the rapper '2 KayWay.' A graduate of Wenonah High School and the Midfield Institute of Cosmetology, she was at a residence in Birmingham, Alabama, on the evening of August 21, 2024, when her life was cut short by gunfire. The shooting, which took place in the Germania Park neighborhood, also claimed the life of 20-year-old Na’Bryan Darrell Key Adams.
The incident occurred just after 8:00
p.m. in the 700 block of 30th Street Southwest. According to the Birmingham Police Department's preliminary investigation, an unknown person or persons fired shots toward the home from outside. First responders arrived to find Kayla with critical injuries. She was transported by Birmingham Fire and Rescue to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just before 11:00 p.m.
Na'Bryan Adams was also struck during the shooting. He was taken to Princeton Hospital by a private vehicle with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, August 22.
Birmingham police launched a double homicide investigation, but for nearly eight months, no arrests were made. Then, in the spring of 2025, the case saw a significant development. On April 10, 2025, authorities arrested 23-year-old Jamil Carillo-Jemison in Birmingham. He was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of both Kayla Warren and Na'Bryan Adams. As of April 2025, Carillo-Jemison was being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
