On a cold January evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 32-year-old Stacey Flournoy was tragically cut short, marking the city's first homicide of the new year. On January 5, 2020, Flournoy was sitting in a vehicle in the Inglenook neighborhood when gunfire erupted. Responding to the sound of shots and a call about a person down, Birmingham Police officers discovered her on the front porch of a residence on 39th Court North, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders rushed Flournoy to UAB Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead later that night. Another individual, a male, was also wounded in the shooting and was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries. In the immediate aftermath, investigators worked to piece together the events of that evening, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
For a year, the case remained at the forefront of the minds of her family and the community. Then, in January of 2021, a break in the case came when authorities announced they had charged 28-year-old Delvin Lamar Hunter with capital murder for Stacey Flournoy's death. At the time the charges were brought, Hunter was already incarcerated at the Jefferson County Jail on unrelated drug trafficking and firearm possession charges. His extensive criminal history led to a bond of over $2 million for the prior offenses, keeping him in custody as he faced the new and most serious charge of capital murder.
