On February 18, 2016, 28-year-old Gwendolyn Ayers was fatally shot in west Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Second Court West. According to reports, Ayers was walking in the area when she became involved in a verbal altercation with individuals in a gold Buick LeSabre. The confrontation escalated, leading to Ayers being shot. She attempted to flee but collapsed nearby on 15th Street West and was pronounced dead at the scene.
