In a tragic turn of events on a Thursday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, a young woman's life was cut short. Twenty-six-year-old Nikita Nicole Walker was visiting a friend at a residence in the 700 block of New Hill Court on June 20, 2024, when an argument broke out. The dispute involved a man who was reportedly the boyfriend or an acquaintance of Walker's friend and was causing a disturbance.
The verbal confrontation escalated, and the man is said to have specifically targeted Walker, ultimately shooting her. First responders arrived at the scene at approximately 10:15 p.m. to find Walker unresponsive on an exterior set of stairs. Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, she was pronounced dead at the location. The devastating scene was further compounded by the arrival of Walker's mother, who learned of her daughter's death at the scene and informed police that her daughter was five months pregnant.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the suspect fled. However, with the immediate assistance of witnesses in the community, police were able to identify him as 41-year-old Demetrius Kid. Within a week of the incident, Kid turned himself in to the authorities. He has since been charged with capital murder and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Court records indicate that at the time of the shooting, Kid was on probation for a domestic violence conviction from the previous March.
