On April 4, 1977, Jody Suzanne Ford, a 41-year-old transgender woman and owner of Ms. Sid's Coiffures in Birmingham's Five Points South, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Vestavia Motor Lodge in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. The incident began earlier that evening outside the Brookwood Village cinema, where Ford and her former wife, Wanda, encountered Larry Maddox, the 26-year-old manager of the motel.
