Mario Vences, an 18-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on June 14, 2022, in East Austin, Texas. The incident occurred in the 1000 block of Springdale Road, where a verbal conflict escalated into violence when someone pulled out a gun and fired several shots. Despite life-saving measures, Mario succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The Austin Police Department identified a person of interest in the case, 17-year-old Alexander Cruz.
According to witness statements, Mario had messaged Cruz earlier that day asking for a ride. When they met, there were five other armed individuals present. After Mario stated he no longer needed a ride, Cruz and the others left the apartment. Later, Mario was found outside a residence with gunshot wounds, and despite efforts to save him, he passed away at the hospital.
APD filed murder charges against Alexander Cruz in connection with Mario's death. Cruz was identified by witnesses as the one holding a .45 caliber pistol, and .45 caliber bullet casings were found at the scene. However, Cruz was not listed in the Travis County Jail at the time, and his bond was set at $75,000.
The investigation is ongoing, and APD continues to seek information from the public to bring justice for Mario Vences. The case remains a significant part of the city's efforts to address and reduce violent crime in the area.
