In the early hours of a Saturday morning, on July 18, 2026, the life of 23-year-old Tyris Ty Rivers, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Austin, Texas. The fatal incident unfolded at the La Cima Apartments located in the 3200 block of Montopolis Drive, where Austin police responded to multiple reports of gunfire shortly after midnight. Upon their arrival at approximately 12:17 a.m., officers discovered Rivers in a breezeway outside an apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:28 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect who had remained at the scene. Jaquan Easley, a 29-year-old Black male, was taken into custody by the Austin Police Department and subsequently charged with the murder of Tyris Rivers. According to the arrest affidavit, the shooting occurred after a physical altercation between the two men. A woman present at the scene informed investigators that Rivers had knocked on the apartment door, forced his way inside, and assaulted Easley. She stated that after the initial confrontation, Rivers exited the apartment.
Following the altercation, Easley is said to have armed himself with a handgun and followed Rivers into the hallway, where the fatal shots were fired. Easley claimed to have acted in self-defense, alleging that Rivers had attacked him for a second time in the hallway. However, the physical evidence gathered by detectives at the scene appeared to contradict Easley's account of the events. Investigators noted that the evidence suggested Rivers was shot from behind and at a distance, which would indicate he no longer posed a significant threat to Easley at the time of the shooting. The case was marked as Austin's 35th homicide of 2026. As of the latest available information, Jaquan Easley was arrested and charged with murder, and the case was pending further legal proceedings. There is no publicly available information regarding a trial, conviction, or sentencing in this case.
