Anitra Reyonna Holloman, a 21-year-old female, found her life tragically cut short on a Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, when a celebration with friends turned into a scene of unimaginable violence. On September 21, 2024, while waiting in line outside the Hush Lounge in the city's popular Five Points South entertainment district, multiple gunmen unleashed a barrage of over 100 bullets into the crowd.
Anitra was struck and died at the scene, one of four fatalities in a mass shooting that also left 17 people wounded. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, the father of Anitra's young daughter had also been a victim of gun violence just two years prior, leaving their child without either parent.
A student at Lawson State with dreams of becoming a teacher, Anitra was described by her mother as a beautiful person with a big smile who loved her family deeply. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, and her sudden death left her family and community reeling with grief. The shooting, which police stated was not a random act, launched a massive investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led to a series of arrests. The first suspect taken into custody was Damien McDaniel, who was charged with capital murder in connection with the mass shooting as well as other homicides in the Birmingham area. As the investigation continued, authorities identified and arrested three additional suspects: Naquin Lawler, Cresan McLemore Bruce, and Hatarius Woods. All four men were charged with capital murder and multiple counts of first-degree assault. The suspects are being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond as they await legal proceedings. Investigators believe the mass shooting may have been the result of a murder-for-hire plot and that one of the intended targets was among those killed that night.
