On April 17, 1979, Officer Richard J. Adair, aged 51, of the Juneau Police Department, responded to a report of gunfire in a residential neighborhood. The incident began when a suspect, without provocation, shot at a neighbor driving out of his driveway, injuring him. The wounded driver managed to drive down a hill before losing consciousness and crashing, prompting neighbors to alert the authorities.
