On April 17, 1979, in Juneau, Alaska, Officer Jimmy Earl Kennedy, aged 32, was fatally shot while responding to a "shots fired" call. The incident began when a man, without provocation, opened fire on a neighbor, wounding him as he drove out of his driveway. The injured neighbor managed to drive down a hill before losing consciousness and crashing, prompting nearby residents to alert the police.
