On January 8, 2019, at approximately 3:35 pm, Watts was found suffering from multiple stab wounds in the 5300 block of Dix Street, Northeast, near Marvin Gaye Park. Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Police Department swiftly launched a homicide investigation into the death of the District Heights, Maryland resident.
The investigation led to the arrest of 25-year-old Dejuan George of Northeast, D.C., on February 27, 2019. He was charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Watts' stabbing. During a preliminary hearing, a witness testified to seeing the attack, identifying George as the assailant from a photograph. However, the witness's account had some inconsistencies, including the number of times Watts was stabbed. Body-worn camera footage from the scene reportedly captured Watts identifying George as the person who attacked him, although the audio was not clear. A judge found probable cause for the second-degree murder charge to proceed. Initially, the judge ordered George to be placed in a halfway house with GPS monitoring, but he was later detained at the D.C. Jail.
The legal proceedings against Dejuan George in the death of Abdul Watts did not reach a final resolution in court. On June 22, 2023, George, then 29 years old, was involved in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Holbrook Terrace and Montello Avenue, Northeast. He sustained life-threatening injuries and died two days later, on June 24, 2023.
