In the early evening of September 21, 2020, tragedy struck in the Deanwood neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C. Cimerron Kennedy, a 29-year-old male, found his life cut short in a violent encounter. At approximately 6:08 p.m., officers from the Sixth District of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 3500 block of Jay Street, N.E., following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Kennedy suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were promptly on the scene, and Kennedy was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The incident cast a somber shadow over the community, prompting an immediate and thorough investigation by homicide detectives.
The investigation into Kennedy's death led detectives to a suspect. On Friday, October 23, 2020, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, apprehended 23-year-old Anthony Jones of Oxon Hill, Maryland. Jones was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Kennedy. At the time of the incident, Jones was under the supervision of the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia and had a prior arrest history that included charges for unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of unregistered ammunition, and possession of a controlled substance. The investigation into the motive and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained ongoing.
