In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Washington, D.C., a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss. David Elijah Brandon, a 30-year-old man, was shot and killed on February 24, 2019. The incident that led to his death began with an altercation inside the Safari DC Restaurant and Lounge located in the 4300 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest.
Following the dispute, patrons, including Brandon, were made to leave the establishment.
Outside the nightclub, the conflict escalated. Surveillance footage from the scene captured a man, later identified as Brandon Randall of Annapolis, Maryland, walking away from the club with his associates. As they moved away, Randall pulled a firearm from his waistband. Simultaneously, one of his associates punched another individual. Randall then opened fire into the crowd before fleeing with his group, continuing to shoot as he ran towards an SUV. In the chaos, David Brandon was struck by five bullets. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Another individual was also wounded in the shooting.
In the days following the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department actively sought the public's help, releasing a video of four persons of interest and a vehicle connected to the homicide. Their investigation led them to Brandon Randall, who was arrested on July 17, 2019. Randall was initially indicted on charges of first-degree murder while armed, two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, assault with intent to kill while armed, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
On November 22, 2022, Brandon Randall pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder while armed. In June 2023, he was sentenced to 24 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. During the sentencing hearing, David Brandon's family and friends shared powerful victim impact statements, remembering him as a devoted father and a vibrant human being whose life was senselessly taken.
