In the late evening of Thursday, March 17, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in the southern part of the District of Columbia. At approximately 8:33 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 4100 block of South Capitol Terrace, SW. Upon arrival, they discovered a young man inside a car, suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as 20-year-old Jacky Brooks of Hyattsville, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel found that he showed no signs consistent with life, and he was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately launched an investigation into the shooting death of the young male. In the days that followed, the police department appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for this violent act. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Six months after the fatal shooting, a breakthrough was made in the case. On September 20, 2022, detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department arrested a suspect in connection with the homicide. The individual taken into custody was identified as 19-year-old River Barfield. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed for his alleged involvement in the death of Jacky Brooks. The arrest marked a significant development in the investigation, bringing a measure of progress for a family grieving the loss of a young life.
