In the early hours of a February morning in Washington, D.C., a house party that began with friends enjoying themselves took a tragic and fatal turn. Inside a residence on the 1600 block of Rosedale Street, Northeast, 35-year-old Darius Robinson, a male resident of Northwest, D.C., was shot and killed. The incident, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. on February 18, 2023, cut his life short and left a community searching for answers.
Metropolitan Police Department officers who responded to
the reports of a shooting discovered Robinson unresponsive inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed pointed to a suspect who was also a guest at the party, a man who, according to the homeowner, 'killed a man for nothing' before fleeing into the night. Detectives believe the victim and the suspect were acquainted with each other.
The investigation into Darius Robinson's death led to the swift arrest of 25-year-old Charles Demarco Best of Clinton, Maryland. Best was initially charged with second-degree murder. As the case proceeded through the legal system, a judge found probable cause that Best was the perpetrator. Subsequently, the charges against him were elevated to first-degree premeditated murder, along with firearm possession charges.
Court documents and hearings revealed more about the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. Witnesses indicated that there was an undercurrent of tension at the party, as some were unhappy with Best's presence due to a previous altercation where he had allegedly broken the jaw of the party host's sister. Following the shooting, investigators were able to track Best's escape route and recovered a firearm from a trash can in his path. Best has since pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case continues in the court system.
