In the early morning hours of Friday, November 8, 2013, the sound of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness in a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. When the echoes of more than two dozen shots faded, 27-year-old Tyree Beysean Miller, a Black male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 5000 block of Bass Place, Southeast, near Nalle Elementary School.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:23 a.m., was described by residents as a gun battle, a violent shootout that left several cars in the area damaged.
Emergency responders rushed Tyree Miller to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. At the scene, police discovered a semi-automatic weapon near Miller's body, which they believed may have been used in an exchange of fire with one or more assailants. The nature of the confrontation suggested a chaotic and violent encounter, with a gun found next to Miller having run out of bullets.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the neighborhood was left on edge as police began their investigation into the brazen act of violence. While authorities canvassed the area and collected evidence, no immediate arrests were made, and suspects remained at large. The Metropolitan Police Department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Miller's death. Despite the public appeal for assistance, initial reports did not name any suspects, and the motive behind the deadly shooting was believed to be a possible dispute involving drugs.
