In the winter of 1931, the roads weaving through the landscape near Alexandria, Louisiana, were arteries for the illicit liquor trade. On December 18th, Prohibition Agent Eugene Joseph Pearce, a 39-year-old White male, was on patrol with his fellow agents, Paul Hornaday and W. H. Chilton.
